I’ll be honest. I probably don’t like writing up bills all that much more than you like paying them. I’d much rather be earning my money by working for clients than wasting my time counting up the minutes I already spent doing so. That’s why I strongly prefer to work on a flat fee basis. If we do a flat fee, it’s pretty simple. You give me a call. We talk about your situation and what you’d like me to accomplish for you. I think about the situation and how much time and effort it’s likely to take for me to best address your issue, and how much value I can reasonably expect to deliver. If you want me to negotiate a plea, I’ll give you a specific price for that, and you can count on that price. We’ll also figure out a price or rate for if you want to go to trial. Either way, you’ll know exactly how much you’re going to be paying, without having to worry about how much time I might be spending on the phone with prosecutors. It won’t raise your bill.
I can’t say that I have the lowest prices in town. I don’t have a list of prices for all the other lawyers in Columbia, and the specifics are likely to vary from case to case. But as a relatively young solo attorney, I’ve learned that the real trick is finding a steady stream of clients, not maximizing the fees I charge the ones I do find. So while I can’t say my prices are definitely the lowest, I can say that providing the lowest possible prices and best possible value to my clients is something I actively strive for. If someone is offering a better deal than me, I frankly want to know about it so that I can do better.
As a solo attorney, I have no boss to please except my clients, and no associates that depend on a paycheck from me. Since I work from home, I have little or no overhead. If my prices aren’t at the very least competitive, I have both the ability and desire to lower them. Negotiate with me if you like. The worst I might do is say no.
